According to a National Survey of Consumer Attitudes towards Companies that Hire People with Disabilities, 92% of the American public view companies that hire people with disabilities more favorably than those that do not. And, 87% of the public would prefer to give their business to companies that hire people with disabilities. Studies such as this one are very valuable in making the business case to employers as to why employers should hire people with disabilities. Report: Employer Incentives for Hiring Individuals with Disabilities (SHRM/UTSA/WSU/CPRF)

The primary focus of the survey was to determine how knowledgeable HR professionals are regarding various governmental incentives for hiring individuals with disabilities. In addition, the survey sought to find out how many companies actually take advantage of employer incentives and who in companies make decisions about using them. A secondary focus of the survey was to assess HR professionals’ attitudes and opinions regarding the impact of the ADA on the employment of individuals with disabilities; determine the level of effort companies expend in recruiting individuals with disabilities; and gain insight into senior managements' personal experiences with disabilities. Furthermore, the survey sought the opinions of HR professionals on how best to improve the employment of individuals with disabilities

DOL Issues NPRM on Section 188 Nondisrimination Provisions under WIOA

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL's) Civil Rights Center (CRC) announces the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM)updating the Section 188 WIOA Nondiscrimination and Equal Opportunity Regulations (29 CFR Part 38). Section 188 prohibits discrimination against individuals in any program or activity that receives financial assistance under Title I of the WIOA as well as by the One-Stop part ners listed in WIOA Section 121(b) that offer programs or activities through the One-Stop/American Job Center workforce development system. Section 188 prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, and for beneficiaries, applicants, and participants only, citizenship status, or because of an individual’s participation in a program or activity that receives financial assistance under Title I of WIOA. Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT)

The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT) is a multi-faceted initiative promoting the employment, retention, and career advancement of people with disabilities through the development, adoption, and promotion of accessible technology. PEAT is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy and is managed by the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA). Guided by a consortium of policy and technology leaders, PEAT is the only entity of its kind that brings together employers, technology providers, thought leaders, and technology users around the intersecting topics of accessible technology and employment. Webinar: Small Business and Disability Employment: Steps to Success

ADA- PARC Survey: Transportation Access and Experiences

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Participation Action Research Consortium (ADA-PARC) extends an invitation to participate in a national survey designed to improve understanding of accessibility of public transportation for people with disabilities. This survey is being conducted by the ADA-PARC, a collaborative research project of seven ADA Regional Center. This project focuses on community living, community participation and work/economic participation disparities of people with disabilities (For more information, visit the website: www.adaparc.org ). ADA-PARC would like to improve its understanding on transportation access of people with disabilities and use this information to make improvements at regional and national levels. DOT: Accessible Transit Services for All

US Department of Transportation Federal Transit Authority This U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) report provides a fresh look at paratransit and how agencies can improve service effectiveness and cost efficiency. Webinar: Federal Facilities and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Standards - A Refresher

This webinar will be held on August 6, 2015 from 2:30 – 4:00 PM Eastern Time and is hosted by the United States Access Board. This webinar, part of the U.S. Access Board’s free monthly series will provide a refresher on standards issued under the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA). The ABA Accessibility Standards apply to facilities designed, built, altered, or leased with certain federal funds. The ABA covers federal buildings, including post offices, social security offices, and federal courthouses, as well as non-federal facilities, such as public housing units and mass transit systems that receive federal funding. The Access Board enforces the ABA Standards through the investigation of complaints. Presenters will provide an overview of the ABA standards and the Board's enforcement process, including an update on the status of compliance over the past five years.
