Educating Employers About Hiring/Retaining Persons with Disabilities

As part of ongoing technical assistance to for the Disability Program Navigator Initiative, NDI Consulting Inc. hosted a recent webinar, Employer 30-Second Training Series and Resource Guide. This webinar provided an overview of the newly developed Employer 30-Second Training Series which includes eighteen 30-Second Trainings in the following four categories: 1) Compliance Benefits 2) ADA Basics 3) Recruitment and Hiring Strategies, and 4) Employment Basics. What is a 30-Second Training 30-Second Trainings are short, easy and fun and are designed to increase knowledge of disability and employment related issues. They should only take about 30 seconds to review and include national, reputable resources for follow up information. The resources—Employer 30 Second Training Series and Resource Guide—were developed to be used by those with an employer focus and were designed to educate employers, hiring managers and supervisors about proven strategies and easy-to-use resources that can assist in retaining and accommodating existing employees who experience the onset of a disability. These tools will also provide valuable information and sources of support to employers in hiring qualified employees who experience a disability, including strategies and resources that can assist in effectively accommodating all employees in achieving their maximum potential and productivity level.

Workforce3 One Webinar: Transportation Connections to the Workplace: Keys to Self-Sufficiency (Recorded Version 2007)

Recognizing the importance of transportation in serving their customers, several of the WIBs, One-Stop Career Centers, and Disability Program Navigators have developed and implemented effective solutions to connect their customers to the workplace. This Webinar highlighted these successful strategies and demonstrate: (1) how the workforce investment system can leverage diverse federal funds to support local transportation to employment and training activities; (2) transportation options currently available to serve the targeted service groups; (3) models the workforce investment system and service providers can replicate; and (4) how the workforce investment system can work with community partners to facilitate access to transportation resources, to connect its customers to training and jobs.

On July 18, 2012, there was a Workforce3One webinar entitled,"Understanding the New Department of Labor Civil Rights Guidelines Governing Criminal Background Checks and Federally-Funded Workforce Development Programs." ETA Assistant Secretary was joined by DOL's Civil Rights Center and the Office of the Solicitor, as well as the National Employment Law Project, and the Oakland Private Industry, Inc. Reintegartion of fornerly incarcerated persons into communities is a priority for this Administration. Secretary Solis stated: "When someone serves time in our penal syutem, they should not face a lifetime sentence of unemployment when released..." DOL initiatives support reentry-Federal bonding protection for employers who hire people with a criminal record, reentry grants and programs and TEGL 31-11.

WIOA Webinar Report:; Consultation with Consumers, Advocacy Groups, and Direct Service Providers on Services for Individuals with DisabilitieS

The U. S. Department of Labor (DOL) held the following Webinar on August 26, 2014: WIOA Stakeholder Consultation: Consultation with Consumers, Advocacy Groups, and Direct Service Providers on Services for Individuals with Disabilities. The webinar report from this webinar is now available on an Excel spreadsheet. The report notes that 87.27% of 110 respondents said that they would recommend this webinar to a colleague. Totaling the numbers from Tab 1 & 2, there were approximately 620 attendees (597 logins out of 1047 registrants and approximately 23 grouped participants).

Serving Disabled Veterans in the One-Stop Career Center System: Win-Win Partnerships Between the Disability Program Navigators, Disabled Outreach Program (DVOPs), and Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVERs).

The Idaho Disability Program Navigator project has developed and implemented successful strategies to build the workforce investment system’s capacity to provide more meaningful and effective employment opportunities to disabled veterans through the workforce investment system. Key to this success is the partnerships established and maintained between the DPNs, LVERs, and DVOPs, co-located in the One-Stop Career Centers.

If the One-Stop Career Centers are to meet the challenges of effectively serving the increasing number of disabled veterans seeking employment services, there needs to be collaboration and coordination between the public workforce investment system and programs that serve disabled veterans. This Webinar will highlight promising practices for replication at the local levels between the DPNs, DVOPs, and LVERs to serve disabled veterans in the One-Stop Career Centers.

Connecting One-Stop Career Centers with the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Ticket to Work Program: Becoming an Employment Network (EN)-A Way to Serve Customers with Disabilities and Generate Revenues for the One-Stop Career Center system

This Webinar will highlight promising practices and lessons learned to facilitate the State and Local Workforce Investment Boards (S/LWIBs) and One-Stop Career Centers connecting with the SSA’s Ticket to Work Program. This Program provides work incentives for beneficiaries with disabilities who want to work. Examples of service coordination among workforce partners utilizing the Ticket to Work incentives will be shared during this Webinar.

Learn about how the One-Stop Career Centers that became ENs are generating program income which can be used for their operations. The Webinar will focus on how seven state agency partners, led by the Disability Program Navigator initiative in Iowa’s state workforce agency, became an approved EN in 2007. Revenue is being generated through the EN payment process.

Integrated Resource Team (IRT) Model: Strategy to Serve Job Seekers with Multiple Barriers to Employment, Including Disabilities, in the One-Stop Career Center system

The Navigators act as facilitators to bring together multiple partners in the One-Stop Career Centers to develop an integrated resource team approach with the purpose of blending and braiding resources around an individual customer’s employment needs. This Webinar will highlight how the Oregon DPN project is using the IRT model to develop individual employment plans for job seekers with disabilities, as well as to coordinate resources across the workforce and disability systems to address multiple employment needs. Integrated Resource Team Webinar

Integrated Resource Teams (IRT) are bringing together public and private sector representatives at the local One-Stop community level to improve communication and collaboration that results in enhanced coordination of services and supports at an individual level for a job seeker with a disability. An IRT represents one of many options that a local area may be able to use to provide an increased level of support for a job seeker with a disability.

DPN 30 Second Trainings

A 30-Second Training is a quick fun Power Point slide show that is electronically sent out to One-Stop and Partner staff and can be completed in a very short amount of time hence, 30-Seconds Trainings. They provide disability and employment information usually with a resource link for those that are interested in furthering their knowledge and expertise.

  • 30-Second Trainings are designed to be fast, informative and entertaining to capture the attention of busy One-Stop staff, partners and/or employers in a 30-Second PowerPoint Show.
  • 30-Second Trainings can be used to either introduce topics and information for the first time, or to reinforce information that has already been presented in a formal presentation. It is one of many options on a menu of training strategies and techniques for Navigators to have in their toolbox. While it can be used as a stand-alone training, it is best used to augment other training.
  • 30-Second Training topics cover a wide-range of disability and employment issues in a way that is easy to process and that leads the end-user to a reputable internet resource where they can find additional information on the topic when they have the time or the need to access it.
