Disability and Employment CoP November Theme - Transportation Challenges and Resources for Successful Employment

Posted by Alexandra Kielty - On November 04, 2014 (EST)

The Workforce3One Disability and Employment CoP Theme for November is on employment transportation options for job seekers with disabilities. It is generally recognized that transportation is one of the primary issues for people trying to attend training, job interviews, and obtaining/retaining employment. It is a particular challenge for individuals with disabilities with accessible vehicles and driving licensure not available for many of these individuals. Additionally, public transportation is often unavailable or unreliable. People with disabilities living in rural areas and seeking employment are particularly impacted by transportation problems. Workforce professionals often note that transportation barriers are one of their greatest challenges for many of their customers, including people with disabilities.

An important partner to address these challenges is the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) which has done considerable work to address the workforce transportation challenges. It established their JobLinks Employment Transportation for Workforce Professionals website that includes resources and assistance to link job seekers to education and employment with helpful information on transportation relative to people with disabilities.
