The public transportation industry is one of many industries that is facing a huge number of retirements in the next 10 years. To assist recruiting new workers to this industry, Rutgers University’s John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development and Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation, have partnered on the Transit Virtual Career Network online job portal.
Visitors to the site can explore more than 50 different front-line transit-related occupations, learn what it takes to prepare for these jobs, identify local educational and training programs and tap into current job listings. Many don’t require a college education, but all require a high school degree. Users can set up a customized career management account that will allow them to save occupational preferences and other information. They also can find sources of financial aid and to develop requests for academic credit based on previous experience, such as military. The Heldrich Center also recently partnered on two other aspects of the Virtual Career Network: Health Care and Green Economy.
